The question is really important and the matter is old as it can be. As people invented the idea of borrowing clothes for money on mass scale there become a dilemma - is it worth to do that or is it better to have our own formal clothes? 
The shortest answer is: it depends. Our choice should be made whether we need or we not need this type of clothes regularly or just once in a while. It can be difficult if once in a week we have a big meeting at the office or some sort of elegant party that we have to participate. It would be just a waste of our time and probably money.
Although in the regular case when wearing formal wear everyday or weekend hiring clothes wouldn’t be good it is a major improvement if we don’t wear it too often and we have a big party to attend and are willing to make a huge impression on someone. This is the case when we would like to hire tuxedo or rent a suit.
The same occasion is the wedding. Wedding wear can be very expensive - is it a men’s wear or women’s wear. Hiring a wedding dress or hiring suit would be much cheaper than just buying it. Especially when it comes to women. If a guy is willing to wear tuxedo he can wear it once in a while (of course if his weight didn’t change) during long years. But a girl will wear her wedding dress only once.
If we don’t have money problems we can choose to buy clothes whether we are wearing it once or twice in the lifetime. If we think about our money rationally and would rather spend it on something more useful or pleasant we should think carefuly about formal wear hire.

It’s not really necessary for you to buy some formal wear especially when you don’t have enough budget for that. But there are some stores that offers you the attires that your looking for having a small budget. But I think that there’s no need to buy new ones. Just be creative enough.
