When buying your prom dress, the biggest mistake you can make is assuming you wear the same dress size as t-shirt size. Ladies, as terrified as you are of knowing, you are going to have to break out the measuring tape.
First, how about a few tips on how to get the most accurate measurement. When measuring each part, wrap the tape snuggly around you, but do not pull it tight. It helps if you have a second set of hands that are willing to help reach areas that may be awkward to position by yourself. Also, do not suck in your stomach no matter how tempting it may be. Take all measurements over your panties and the bra you plan to wear with your prom dress. Finally, write down the measurements as you go along.
Remember, the more accurately you measure, the better your dress will fit.
Bust: When measuring your bust, place the tape around the fullest part of your chest and over the bra that will go with your dress. Line up the tape with your nipples and straight across your back to get the most accurate measurement. Also, keep your arms and shoulders relaxed.
Waist: This measurement is of the narrowest part of you body. Take this measurement by placing the tape slightly above your belly button and going around your body in a perfectly straight line. Leave one finger underneath the tape to allow for breathing room within your prom dress.
Hips: Your hips are the fullest part of you lower body. Stand with your feet together and, again, draw a straight line with the measuring tape across your hips. Typically, if you are under 5’3” your hips are 6” below your waistline, and if you are over 5’4” your hips are 7” below your waistline.
Shoulder: Make sure your shoulders are relaxed, but not hunched over. Measure from the top of one shoulder to the top of the other.
The most important idea to remember is that no one will ever see the size on the inside of the dress. Buying a size that is too small just for the sake of it will be unflattering and also make you look larger than you actually are.
