As a wedding guest at a beach wedding, you are not expected to dress in formal clothes. A man in a nice short sleeved shirt, no tie and casual slacks would be appropriately dressed. For a woman, a colorful sundress and sandals is the way to go.
If the wedding is in the evening, it is most likely a formal affair. If it is stated ‘black tie’ on the invitation that means a tuxedo for the men and formal dresses for the ladies. That is the time to show off your best outfits and add some bling.
An afternoon wedding usually calls for a little less formal clothing. Only the wedding party would be wearing tuxedos. Male guests would be fine in a dark blue or black suite, dress shirt and tie. The women should choose sophisticated, yet casual outfits, such as a two piece suite or a cocktail length dress and high heels.
If the wedding is just a small family affair with a few friends invited, again, the bride may suggest that the dress is casual. Today, more and more functions find the attendees in casual clothing.
Never wear shorts or flip-flops no matter how casual it is. You also don’t want to wear an inappropriate or extremely short dress to a church. That would be a sign of disrespect.
If you are still unsure what to wear, ask the bride or groom for what they prefer the guests to wear. It is their day after all and they set the rules. It never hurts to ask.
