What Should I Wear to a Wedding?

With wedding season in full swing and set to continue for a few more weeks, if you’ve been invited to a couple then you’re probably wondering what to wear? So here are my top tips for dressing well for a wedding.

1. The golden rule is never upstage the bride. Yes you want to look fabulous, and yes the photos will be looked at forever, but remember it is her big day and she WILL want to look the best.

2. Keep it classic. That tiny top hat or puffball skirt might be fashionable now, but in ten years, or for some fashions ten months, it may look dated or even ridiculous. Obviously if it’s the kind of wedding where everyone will be fashion forward then this rule doesn’t apply, but for most weddings it does.

3. Make sure you are comfortable. That boned corset dress and those 6 inch heels might look great at 10′o clock in the morning, but 12 hours later after a 3 course meal and copious amounts of champagne will you really feel like hitting the dance floor when your ribs feel crushed and your feet ache? No! So choose carefully to strike the balance between comfort and style.

4. Don’t reveal too much. It probably goes without saying but, steer clear of short skirts or plunging necklines. You don’t want to shock great Aunt Mable too much, and this tip is even more important if the actual ceremony is in a church.

5. Give something old a new lease of life. Weddings can be expensive what with the gift, travel and accommodation, so rather than splurge on something new, see if there’s something you already have that can be tweaked for wedding perfection. A simple corsage pinned to a plain dress can add a splash of colour, add a bright pair of shoes and bag and you’re ready to go.

6. Take a big enough bag. I really can’t stress this enough. If you’re anything like me all those lovely dainty clutches seem like such a great idea, then you get to the morning of the wedding and find you can’t even fit your purse in let alone your lippy and camera. So check your bag has room for all the bits and bobs you’ll want to take.

7. Check the colour scheme of the wedding and then avoid it. There’s nothing worse than turning up in the same colour dress as the bridesmaids, as you’ll spend the day looking like you want to be a bridesmaid but weren’t asked.

8. Avoid easily creased fabrics like linen. They may look great and keep you cool, but after sitting for a long period they can look like they’ve been screwed up in ball and then put on.

9. Never wear white. Ever. These days it’s becoming acceptable to wear something patterned with a white background and at some weddings a dark cream is OK, but block white is never ok unless you want to be forever known as ‘the girl who wore white to so-and-so’s wedding’.

10. Have fun. This is the most important, and although not strictly to do with what to wear it’s my favourite tip. After all, if you’re genuinely having fun and smiling you’ll look fab anyway.
